A Stitch (pincushion detail) On the Pincushion: The ubiquity of the tomato pincushion was the genesis of this art piece. Everyone has seen the tomato pincushions in the sewing kits of parents and the aisle of the craft store. Tomatoes (the eating variety) have transformed from robust heirloom varieties of to the white and mealy grocery store orbs barely fit for eating. The tomato pincushion has undergone the same dilution. Through sourcing natural fabrics and dyeing them, to stuffing it with traditional materials (beans, wool, and hair) I sought to rediscover what made the tomato pincushion the touchstone of homespun charm that it is. Similarly, the meditative process of making the dozens and dozens of pins – attaching small pieces of sterling silver wire to steel pins, gently drawing a rivet over the delicate pearls – became a meditation on those items we used to use make and use as a culture versus those which we purchase and consume today. A few wasps (as other straight pins), buzz around the tomato. For months I obsessed over the shape of the wooden spools in my collection - their simplicity, smoothness, and their differences from the variety of plastic spools on which I buy my thread today. I cleaned, annealed, and reshaped the piece. Then, using thin gold wire and solder, filled the bare spaces with new metal. I realize I could have done the same with sterling wire and solder, and after replacing the texture my intervention would have been completely unnoticeable. That was not the point. While pupating within their silken cocoons, the silkworms metamorphosize into flightless, mouthless, moths with large downy bodies and tiny wings. The moths live for barely a week- mating, laying eggs, and dying. Bombyx Mori, the mulberry silkworm, is not found outside environments other than those in which they are specifically farmed. Like their tiny wings, Bombyx Mori are themselves a vestigial phase of the silk industry. How have we come to transform living creatures into machines of industry? What is natural? This biological widget - at once organic and anthropogenic - is both cog and factory, a producer of raw materials and part of a more vast industrial system. What causes insomnia? Why can't we sleep? What is the experience of wakefulness like when one desires, needs, sleep? A quick internet search reveals a variety of things that could affect one’s ability to experience restful slumber - ranging from diet to anxiety to lifestyle to hormones. We have represented a variety of these potential insomnia-catalysts here: sugar, our torn-up to-do lists, rope and nets (symbolizing obsessive thought and activity, as well as the feeling of being caught between the states of sleep and wakefulness). This is the show statement I produced for the exhibition. The work in this show is an exercise in identity. Through the work created for this exhibition, we begin to traverse the territory of our own generation. Who are we? Where do we come from? What do we want you to know about our lived experiences? Our process of self-discovery involves much experimentation, trying on different personas while looking ahead, behind, and inside for influences. Amidst the abundance of social media, we understand that identity is a thing, constructed and liable to change. Sometimes we are learning through our pieces - cartographers charting territories unknown. Sometimes we are teaching you - sharing intellectual investigations of histories both learned and discovered. Concurrent with identity is language; ours is one of technology. Attendant to that technology is speed. Our glyphs - “memes” - emerge, spread, and transform through their perfect function as shorthand, instantly conveying complex emotional, intellectual (and often absurd) experiences common within our generation. Whether we embrace or run from these pervasive modern conveniences, their ubiquity makes their influence undeniable. With the world at our fingertips, we become archivists of the world’s information, arranging and editing the work of others and incorporating it with our own. We are caught between nostalgia and rebellion. Sometimes in opposition to, sometimes nostalgic for, “the way things were,” we move inextricably forward in time. We are Millennials regardless of our feelings on the subject. Like generations before us, we have come of age in times of catastrophe and decline: September 11th 2001, The Great Recession, The War on Terror. In spite of this limitless access to information, we often struggle with a sense of detachment, desensitized and overwhelmed by our over-exposure to knowledge. The streaming video is the antidote that creates continuity. Sometimes all we can do is make a punchline from the pain, get a laugh at our own expense. Regardless of this prevailing negativity, our generation embodies optimistic entrepreneurship, unbridled uncertainty as to the necessity of action, and self-determination. We adapt rapidly and chase our desires at any cost. Yes, we have been inculcated to want the moon. Yes, we feel entitled to it. These unrealistic urges are our bomb-shelter in a world embarrassed to have set our expectations so high. As members of this new Lost Generation, we continue to find our way. Artist Statement for Que Patitas! A variety of associations emerge from the assemblage of limbs: lucky rabbit’s feet (lucky for whom?), Milagros, false limbs, and the whole host of representative charms or amulets, hunting trophies, and knick-knacks. Together these parts form a body: a series of animals, individual intercessory prayers, or totemic acquisitions. This manner of charm – a disembodied appendage – appears in cultures across the globe, each culture with its specific relationship to the treatment of the token. These charms, like their traditional inspirations, serve a purpose both symbolic and representational. The limbs belong to different creatures, but traverse the anthropomorphic line and coalesce into a single homunculus. The viewer experiences an implied body of creatures: parts, individuals, a whole. The chimerical product of the constituent elements evokes dreamscapes, mythology, and our understanding of oneself as part of an evolutionary track shared with all other life on Earth. Condensing this multitude into a smaller space creates an opportunity to represent a disintegration of the image across the series of parts. Everyone has seen the tomato pincushions in the sewing kits of parents and the aisle of the craft store. Tomatoes (the eating variety) have transformed from robust heirloom varieties of to the white and mealy grocery store orbs barely fit for eating. The tomato pincushion has undergone the same dilution. Through sourcing natural fabrics and dyeing them, to stuffing it with traditional materials (beans, wool, and hair) I sought to rediscover what made the tomato pincushion the touchstone of homespun charm that it is. Similarly, the meditative process of making the dozens and dozens of pins – attaching small pieces of sterling silver wire to steel pins, gently drawing a rivet over the delicate pearls – became a meditation on those items we used to use make and use as a culture versus those which we purchase and consume today. A few wasps (as other straight pins), buzz around the tomato. For months I obsessed over the shape of the wooden spools in my collection - their simplicity, smoothness, and their differences from the variety of plastic spools on which I buy my thread today. I cleaned, annealed, and reshaped the piece. Then, using thin gold wire and solder, filled the bare spaces with new metal. I realize I could have done the same with sterling wire and solder, and after replacing the texture my intervention would have been completely unnoticeable. That was not the point. Handkerchiefs, bandanas, pocket squares, scarves - all of these bits of fabric are innocuous accessories any individual might carry on any given day. However, The hanky in the backpocket can also function as a secret code within certain sexual subcultures - enabling members to signal (or “flag”) erotic interests without making oneself overly visible outside of the group. This piece pays homage to both the narrative of square dancing gold miners and secret codes in post-Stonewall bars. Thinking about the whirling, changing partners of a square dance, I created this bolo, with a sterling silver frame to display one of the many different enameled panels. Some of the panels are hand-painted bandana patterns representing the spectrum of sexual proclivities for which one can flag. Other panels are decorative - bright 24k gold leaf to bring some shine. I love wearing them, kissing them, looking at them. They are robust sex symbols signalling virility and masculinity.
